Manchester United’s Danny Welbeck hopes he can replace Wayne Rooney for England

Manchester United striker Danny Welbeck left the Etihad Stadium on Monday night with his leg in a protective boot and his hopes of winning the title this season in tatters. There were worries about how serious the injury could be and, with Euro 2012 on the horizon, thoughts of metatarsals sprang to mind.
Luckily for Danny he’d only bruised his leg rather than broken it and the Independent say he should be fine for Euro 2012 but United may not see him again this season. The young striker has had a good season for his local team and scored 12 goals, his all round play is improving and he’s a real contender for Roy Hodgson’s squad.
The 21 year old has represented England at every level from U19 upwards and although there was talk of him being eligible for Ghana, the Longsight born striker always wanted to play in big tournaments for England. He’s already got four caps and is hopeful he’ll be able to represent his country this summer.
In an interview with Four Four Two, he’s asked if he thinks he can replace team mate Wayne Rooney for the first two games of Euro 2012 “Can I replace him? I hope so. I like to think I’m a flexible striker who can adapt to different formations. I’d be lying if I said I prefer to be up top alone.
“Like most strikers I prefer to have a partner up there. But just to be on the pitch is the main thing and I’ll do a job – any job – if I’m asked.”
With a tournament coming up, the penalties question is raised by the football magazine and Welbeck isn’t scared of the responsibility “I score goals so yeah, my hand will go up, definitely.”
Hopefully he doesn’t regret saying tha
