WAYNE ROONEY RELISHES CITY DUEL

Story Image
WAYNE ROONEY is loving slugging it out with Manchester City for the title.

While most United fans would rather not see the rise of the blue side of Manchester, Rooney (left) is relishing the competition.
With usual rivals Chelsea and Arsenal floundering, the Reds would be coasting to the crown but for City’s emergence as genuine rivals.
Rooney said: “I think it is going to be nip and tuck from here on in. It’s brilliant for the neutrals.
“We’re in a good position and are playing the best football we have played all season at the moment.
“I think that gives us the edge over City, the fact we are playing so well.”

AGONY GOES ON FOR FORGOTTEN FERNANDO TORRES

Story Image
CHELSEA’s season went from bad to worse yesterday with another Premier League defeat at West Brom but still there was little opportunity for forgotten man Fernando Torres to revive his own or his club’s fortunes.

Once again the Spaniard was left kicking his heels on the sidelines, second choice to the ageing Didier Drogba, now 33 and with only seven goals to his name this term.
The call to action for Torres came with just 14 minutes left and he could only watch as West Brom’s Gareth McAuley sealed victory for the Baggies moments later.
It seems the Chelsea nightmare will never end for Torres, a man who, for the best part of a decade, was a force of nature, first for Atletico Madrid and then for Liverpool. Now, under Andre Villas-Boas, the striker known as El Nino has been blown so far off course that his last league goal came on September 24.
For a man who scored 91 times in just 214 matches for Atletico and 81 in only 142 appearances at Liverpool, that’s a drought of East African proportions.
So poor has Torres’ recent form been that he’s now unrecognisable from the player who first shot to prominence at the Vicente Calderon Stadium with the Atletico youth team.
Raddy Antic was manager of the Spanish club when Torres was re-writing the goalscoring record books for Atletico’s juniors and the former Barcelona and Real Madrid boss places the blame for the Spaniard’s demise firmly at the door of the beleaguered Chelsea coach.
“If you come from Liverpool to Chelsea and you hardly score in a year then something is wrong, not just with the player but also with the club,” he says.
“If you have a player of his quality you have to choose a different way to play the game.
“If you look at Chelsea, they’re not playing the combination that would suit Torres. For my opinion, of course Torres is not the same player that he was but the coach has to think about what he can do for him to score the goals.”
There is no question that Torres – recently dropped by Spain for the first time in five years – isn’t giving his all for Chelsea.
But Antic said: “Like most strikers he needs the ball – which isn’t happening at Chelsea. He has lost his confidence and that’s everything for a striker.”

Villas-Boas denies Lampard rift

Lampard last week admitted for the first time his relationship with Villas-Boas had “not been ideal”, but Villas-Boas this afternoon reiterated it was “good, excellent”.
The Blues manager claimed that did not mean he and Lampard needed to hold clear-the-air talks on the matter, insisting they were still on speaking terms.
“It’s just a manager-player relationship in the end,” Villas-Boas said.
“Frank’s words are genuine.
“They are genuine from a player that has a reflection of a relationship between us.
“For me, it’s fine, I have no problems with it.”
Star midfielder Lampard has been unhappy with the number of games he has missed this season but Villas-Boas said: “I have to choose the team and I try to choose the best team for every single game.
“It hasn’t involved Frank a couple of times but it doesn’t mean I have a personal problem with him.
“His own interpretation of the relationship is his own but I have no problem with it and I explained it to him.
“They are decisions I have to take for the benefit of the team, always.”
Chelsea fans left little doubt who they would back in any dispute between Villas-Boas and Lampard during last weekend’s Premier League win over Bolton, repeatedly singing the latter’s name throughout.
Villas-Boas was not worried about losing the battle for hearts and minds, saying: “No, not at all. I think the fans take the team’s side.
“We were winning 3-0 – everybody’s happy, no?”
He added of Lampard, who broke another two Chelsea goalscoring records: “He’s a legend of the football club. If they chant his name during the whole game, it’s because he represents exactly that.
“He achieved two great individual records in that game and I think he fully deserves it.
“I hope one day to have the curriculum that Frank has at this football club, which is amazing in terms of trophies.
“If that is the case, that means that I will be a successful manager and my shadow will be lurking over other managers of this football club.”

Arsenal’s Wenger scores one over Liverpool

Arsene Wenger got a pleasant surprise ahead of the showdown against Liverpool when he was named Premier League manager of the month.
Reviled by some fans as Arsenal look certain to end a seventh season without a trophy, the Frenchman has scored one up against Kop idol Kenny Dalglish who ended Liverpool’s six-year trophy drought with a League Cup triumph last Sunday.
Wenger’s Arsenal side suffered a heavy Champions League defeat by AC Milan and crashed out of the FA Cup, but were unbeaten in the league in February.
“If you had read the newspapers in the last two weeks, you must say there is a mistake. I thought they were speaking to somebody else behind me,” he said.
“It was a complete shock to me. I couldn’t understand that at all.”
But the manager of the month award is also based on league form – and Arsenal picked up 10 points from their four matches.
They drew with Bolton but followed that with wins over Blackburn, Sunderland , their FA Cup conquerors, and last weekend’s astonishing 5-2 North London derby victory over Tottenham Hotspur to climb into the top four.
Wenger’s 12th manager of the month award is testimony to the resilience of Arsenal who got off to the worst possible start to the season when they were handed an 8-2 mauling by Manchester United.
The wily Frenchman is now hopeful that victory against Carling Cup winners Liverpool at Anfield on Saturday lunchtime can boost chances of an unlikely turnaround against Milan in next week’s second leg.
“We know that in the Champions League we have a massive score against us,” he said. “But, if we get a good result at Liverpool I think we have a chance.
“For us it’s important to confirm the game we played against Tottenham at Liverpool and then we can focus completely on the Champions League and have a real go.
“What we did in Milan was just not what we do usually in the Champions League and I am sure we’ll see a different Arsenal on Tuesday.
“In the Champions League at home we can score goals, we know that. For us now it’s important for us to go with big belief into the Milan game.”

Man U won’t panic over title chase – Wayne Rooney

Rooney
Wayne Rooney has assured fans of Machester United that the English Premiership side will not panic as the race towards the Premier League title heads to crunch time.
Rooney told Inside United on Thursday that Manchester have the nerve and, most importantly, the experience to ensure the panic button need never be pushed.
After producing an inspired second-half display to come back from three goals down at Chelsea last month, the Reds held out to earn a crucial 2-1 win over Liverpool at Old Trafford and, last weekend, turned one point into three at Carrow Road with a dramatic late winner.
With 22 goals in 29 appearances this season, Rooney admits that in the past an air of panic may have set in during desperate situations. But he says the experience he and many of his team-mates have picked up in recent years has taught the squad never to lose hope.
“When I was a young lad and first at the club we might have been losing a game 1-0 or 2-1 and I’d have been saying ‘just put the ball in the box’ and panicking a bit about losing the game,” he told Inside United.
“Now I’m older and more experienced you know to just keep playing your game because there’s always a chance you’ll get an opportunity to score. I think that comes from playing so many games and the experience you pick up along the way.”
Rooney says preparing properly for every game is particularly important at this stage of the campaign, while staying mentally strong is just as vital.
“It’s important to manage yourself and how your body feels,” he explains. “Training is less intense when there are lots of games and you might take things a bit easier one day because you’re managing how your legs are.
“The training intensity probably goes down (in the final stages of the season) because the matches come thick and fast and you have to make sure you’re right for the games.
“You know you have to be strong mentally to play at your best. We just need to keep focused, keep working hard and hopefully we’ll get our rewards,” he adds.
