Fighting Talk From Gareth Bale

Tottenham winger GarethBale has stated that his side will go into their FA Cup semi-final clash withChelsea full of confidence.
The London rivals meet at Wembley on Sunday in a bid to reach the cup final, with the pair playing out a 0-0 draw in the league at Stamford Bridge recently.
Despite an inconsistent run of form for Tottenhamof late, Bale feels his side can beat the Blues this weekend.
“Obviously we’ve got difficult opposition in Chelsea,” he told The Sun.
“They’re a great side, have done really well in the Champions League and it won’t be easy, but I think if we are on our game on the day, then we can reach the final because I feel we have the better team.
“We played very well at Stamford Bridge recently, it ended goalless but we had the better chances on the day and we probably should have won the game.
“That will give us plenty of confidence going into this match,” he confessed.
The winner will play either Liverpool or Everton in the final.

Yossi Benayoun's plea for chance to end uncertain future

Yossi Benayoun today admitted he faces an uncertain future when his loan spell at Arsenal comes to an end this summer.
The 31-year-old scored in last night’s win at Wolves which moved Arsenal five points clear of fourth-placed Tottenham. But Benayoun was making only his seventh League appearance for the Gunners and is due to return to Chelsea on June 30.
He said: “I think it is difficult to speak now about the future. It is better to concentrate on the five weeks that are left and do my best for the club. I am fully committed to Arsenal and after we will see.
“After June 30, I am going back to Chelsea and then the club and I need to decide. Each one has to think what is best for them.
“I will not lie — I love Chelsea because I have a good relationship there. I didn’t play much because I had a big [Achilles] injury.
“I still have a lot of friends there I talk to every day. Of course I want them to do well but it is difficult.”
Arsene Wenger is unsure whether to extend Benayoun’s loan but the Israeli midfielder has urged the Arsenal manager to give him an extended run to show what he can do.
“When I came, I believed in myself that I could play more,” he added. “I knew there are a lot of quality players but I was ready.
“It is the job of the manager to decide who plays but because I was so patient and I always give 100 per cent it is now coming right for me.
“I came into the team and we beat Manchester City and last night we won and I scored. I really want to keep my place.”
Whether he figures in Arsenal’s  run-in or not, Benayoun is backing the club to finish the season with a flourish and secure third place in the Premier League.
With Spurs engaged in an FA Cup semi-final against Chelsea this weekend, they can move further ahead when Wigan visit Emirates Stadium on Monday night.
He believes Arsenal can continue an excellent run which has seen them win nine of their last 10 League games. “Five points is a big gap but we have to keep playing well and win some games,” he said.
“Next we have Wigan. They beat Manchester United so that is a warning for everyone.
“It will not be an easy game and after there is a match against Chelsea which I can’t play in. There are still a few hard games but I am sure that we will finish in the top three.”

Van Persie equals Premier League record

Robin van Persie's 27 league goals so far this season have come against 17 different sides - equalling the Premier League record.
The only two teams to prevent Robin from scoring this season have been Manchester City and Fulham. He did, however, net against Fulham on the final day of last season, so has scored against 18 different teams in the past 12 months.
Scoring against 17 teams in a 38-game season though has equalled the Premier League record set by former Gunner Ian Wright, who registered against everyone bar Manchester United and Sunderland during the 1996/97 campaign.
The only team Robin has scored home and away against this season is Manchester United, though he has a chance to add to that list in each of Arsenal's last five games.
Currently on 27 Premier League goals for 2011/12, the Dutchman leads the race for the Golden Boot by five from Wayne Rooney.
Overall he has 34 goals in all competitions, and is eighth in the Club's all-time leading scorer charts with 129.

Frank Lampard’s Chelsea future looks good in new season’s kit

Torres, Cech, Lampard, Sturridge
The England man had been rumoured to be on his way out of Stamford Bridge as part of a clear-out of the old guard.
However, Lampard is back in the team and scoring goals under caretaker boss Roberto Di Matteo after being left on the fringes by Andre Villas-Boas.
Meanwhile, former Blues player Gianfranco Zola has admitted he would love the chance to manage Chelsea.
The Blues have improved under the guidance of Di Matteo, reaching the semi-finals of the Champions League, althoughPep Guardiola, Laurent Blanc and Didier Deschamps have been linked with the post.
And former West Ham boss Zola said: ‘I’d be a hypocrite if I said that I wouldn’t want the job, but I don’t think there are the right conditions in place for that.
‘As a Chelsea fan I always want the team to be in the best possible hands, as they are right now with Roberto Di Matteo.’
Chelsea defender Branislav Ivanovic last night appealed against a charge of violent conduct following an incident in Saturday’s win over Wigan at Stamford Bridge.
Ivanovic was caught on video appearing to strike Latics midfielder Shaun Maloney in the midriff moments in the 2-1 win.
An FA regulatory commission will hear the case on Thursday. It’s understood Ivanovic accepts there was contact but denies that it was violent

Chelsea to face All-Stars: Can MLS snap its losing streak?

michael essien

FOX Soccer got the scoop earlier today, confirming what had been rumored: Chelsea is coming over for this year’s Major League Soccer All-Star game (Jul. 25, PPL Park in Philadelphia).
This will be the second time the Abramovites will participate in the event, having also appeared in 2006. On that night, MLS came away 1-0 winners at Toyota Park, with then-Dynamo midfielder Dwayne De Rosario scoring in the 70th minute.
The coach from MLS that day? Philadelphia’s own Peter Nowak, who could be selected to again this time out, given Red Bulls’ boss Hans Backe was chosen last year (when the game was in New York).
To give you an idea of how long ago 2006 was in soccer years, players take saw action that day for Chelsea include Geremi, Shaun Wright-Philips, Andriy Shevchenko, Arjen Robben, and Lassana Diarra.
While the results of these exhibitions don’t mean anything, you can’t help but wonder if MLS is hoping for something more competitive than the last two years. Two easy Manchester United wins (by a combined scoreline of 9-2) left some wondering if the format’s really worth it. It’s nice to get a big, prestigious opponent in for a marque event, but if it’s going to turn into an annual hammering for MLS’s best, the showcase’s novelty will be usurped by trepidation.
There are a few reasons to think this year will be different. First, if Thierry Henry continues to be THIERRY HENRY, he’ll be the most dangerous attacker MLS has had since the league went to this format in 2005.  As Titi showed this winter, he’s still capable of grabbing a goal again Premier League competition.
There’s also Euro 2012 to consider, the last day of which is July 1. Chelsea’s squad is dominated by players who can be expected to take part in UEFA’s championship: goalkeeper Petr Cech (Czech Republic); defenders Ashley Cole, John Terry, and Gary Cahill (England); midfielders Frank Lampard (England), Florent Malouda (France) and Raul Miereles (Portugal); and attackers Daniel Sturridge (England), Fernando Torres and Juan Mata (Spain).
Some of those players will appear in Philadelphia, especially if their nations don’t get out of group. Others won’t even make the trip to the States.
But let’s have some fun. Let’s assume every player that goes to Euro 2012 doesn’t play at PPL Park. What kind of team might we see from Chelsea?
How about …
G:  Ross Turnbull
LB: Ryan Bertrand
CB: David Luiz
CB: Jeffrey Bruma
RB: Branislav Ivanovic
M: Oriol Romeu
M: Ramires
M: Michael Essien
LF: Lucas Piazón
CF: Romelu Lukaku
RF: Gael Kakuta
Mostly kids mixed in with some regulars, and of course, that won’t be the team. Even if it is, MLS’s side will still have their hands full.

Frank Lampard: Don’t blow it now

Frank Lampard has warned his Chelsea team-mates that the club will end the season with nothing if they don’t raise their game for the final six weeks of the season.

Chelsea wasted a great opportunity to move level with fourth-placed Tottenham, who lost 2-1 at home to Norwich yesterday, by conceding a late equaliser in the 1-1 draw at Fulham last night.

It means they are two points behind Spurs and Newcastle in the table with just five matches to go.

Chelsea now face a run of six games in 18 days, starting with their FA Cup semi-final against Spurs at Wembley on Sunday.

They also have a Champions League semi-final against Barcelona, with the first leg at Stamford Bridge on April 18, plus a key match in the race for the top four against Arsenal on April 21.

Lampard said: “It is very exciting because after the first leg in the Champions League against Napoli we looked in a bad way.

“We could have been going out of the Champions League and, who knows, the FA Cup and Premier League [top four]. Now all of a sudden we have turned it around so that we’re fighting on a few fronts.

“We need to really focus on every single game. It’s fatiguing but we really need to get through it.”

RVP: I’ll score when I want…except if…

Arsenal v Manchester City - Premier League
Robin van Persie insists he’s not worried about not finding the back of the net, despite not scoring in nearly a month.
The Dutchman, who has been nothing short of prolific for nearly 15 months, last scored against Newcastle United on March 12th but has since seen a combination of great goalkeeping, poor (in relative terms) finishing and the woodwork deny him the chance to add to his 26 Premier League goal tally.
Speaking to the Arsenal official matchday programme ahead of Sunday’s win over Manchester City, Van Persie spoke about the importance of having an all-round game.
“I’ve always said that I don’t have to be scoring goals to be pleased with my form.
“Of course it’s always nice if you can score too, but for me football is not about just scoring goals.
“I want to play well and help the team, and I’m just happy with that little pass to Theo before the goal against QPR for example.
“I want to be decisive and helpful to the team, whether that’s making a pass or scoring a goal.
“Of course I do want to score as well, but against Everton I hit the post, against Villa there was an unbelievable clearance off the line, and against QPR the keeper made a really good save.
“Normally out of those three chances, at least one would go in.”
Having seen Thomas Vermaelen somehow deflect his first half header off the City line, and having watched a second effort hit the post, let’s hope that seeds of doubt are not starting to germinate in RVP’s mind.
Thankfully, having spent months of the season fending off suggestions that Arsenal are a one man team, the rest of the squad have really stepped up in recent months to prove that they can make the difference during squeaky bum time.

Di Matteo: We deserve our luck

Di Matteo: Defends lucky Blues

The Blues have benefited from some shocking officiating to seal last-gasp 2-1 wins in their last two matches, with poor decisions handing them victory in Wednesday night's Champions League clash with Benfica and Saturday's Premier League game with Wigan.
There have been other lucky escapes since Di Matteo was appointed caretaker manager, something the Italian admitted the sacked Andre Villas-Boas did not enjoy.
"If you look at this team this season, we haven't had exactly a lot of luck," he said. "Sometimes, you need a little break, but I don't think we had actually many this season, to be honest."
That begged the question why Di Matteo was blessed in a way Villas-Boas had not been.
He added: "Well, you need to deserve it. I think you need to deserve your luck.
"It doesn't just come if you sit at home."
Di Matteo said on Friday Chelsea could not afford to drop points against Wigan but he claimed yesterday a draw would not have spelt the end of their top-four ambitions.
"No, I don't think it would've been finished," said Di Matteo, whose side took advantage of Tottenham's failure to win at Sunderland.
"Until theoretically it's impossible, I think we're going to try.
"Spurs drew, so you're going to get a result that you maybe don't expect from teams."
Reiterating he felt the race for a Champions League spot would go to the wire, he added: "We are very, very delighted that we are a little bit closer, because obviously there are always less games now to play.
"But it's still going to be a difficult task."
Chelsea may have ticked off one more Premier League game but their punishing schedule continues with Monday's west London derby at Fulham.
Di Matteo made seven changes yesterday but pointedly did not rest matchwinner Juan Mata, who has started all but one of the Italian's 10 games in charge.
Summer signing Mata is beginning to look tired, but Di Matteo said: "He's a very important player for us. He unlocks situations for us and he's enjoying himself.
"He's a young man, he's got plenty of energy and I've given him a rest here or there. I've taken him off a few times."
Di Matteo would possibly be more inclined to give Mata a breather were Chelsea's other trickster, Daniel Sturridge, not proving more of a liability than an asset at present.
The 22-year-old was at his most frustrating on Saturday and the Stamford Bridge crowd were noticeably on his back before he was substituted.
But Di Matteo said: "I didn't hear that from the fans.
"I was planning to do the change a couple of minutes before that already, so it wasn't because of anything like that."
Admitting Sturridge too often picked the wrong option, he added: "It's about decision-making maybe. But I said before in the past we tend to forget that it's his first full season with us.
"He's still a young man and we still all have to learn and develop."
Di Matteo is expected to make more wholesale changes on Monday, after which Chelsea have what could end up being their only six-day break before the end of the Premier League season.
Asked if that was a relief, Di Matteo scoffed: "Relief? No, I wouldn't describe it as a relief.
"I'm already thinking about Fulham and I haven't thought actually about what's going to happen a couple of days after that."

City likely to sell Balotelli - Mancini

Controversial striker Mario Balotelli will not be picked again this season by Manchester City and is likely to be sold at the end of the campaign, said manager Roberto Mancini after their 1-0 Premier League defeat at Arsenal on Sunday.
Balotelli was sent off for the second time this season as City's hopes of lifting the top-flight title for the first time in 44 years were effectively extinguished at the Emirates.
"I have finished my work with him, I am finished today, but I love him as a guy," Mancini told reporters. "He is not a bad guy and he is a fantastic player but at this moment I am very sorry for him as he is continuing to lose his talent and his quality.
"I hope he understands he is in a bad way for his future and he must change his behaviour. He will not play again (this season) and I will probably try to sell him in the summer.
"He is a fantastic player but I can't continue to have Mario on the pitch. We have problems every time," Mancini said of his fellow Italian after Manchester United opened an eight-point lead over second-placed City at the top of the table.
"Every time we risk a sending-off, like today. Okay today it was in the last few minutes but you can score a goal in the last minutes."
Balotelli has kept the front and back-page headline writers busy with a succession of on and off-the-field antics all season.
The Italian international was lucky to stay on the pitch after a dangerous studs-up first-half challenge on Arsenal's Alex Song that the referee did not see.
Two separate yellow cards later for nasty challenges on Bacary Sagna meant he was dismissed in the 90th minute.
During the week Mancini said that if he had been a teammate of Balotelli in his own playing days he would probably have ended up punching him and even now he does not speak to him every day "because if I did I would need a psychologist".
MOURINHO REMARK
Having known him since Balotelli was a 17-year-old player at his former club Inter Milan, Mancini said he understood his good qualities too.
"I punished him earlier in the season," Mancini said, "and anyone who says I allow different behaviour from Mario to the other players - this is totally false".
Real Madrid coach Jose Mourinho, during a spell in charge at Inter, once said Balotelli was "unmanageable".
"If Mario continues like this I probably agree with that," said Mancini, "but he is 22 and when you are young you make mistakes. But I hope for him, not for me, that he can change.
"I don't know if he will be banned for the next three or four games but now I need to be sure I have 11 players on the pitch and with Mario this is a big risk.
"It is clear he creates problems but he also scores important goals. It was Mario who scored two goals against United when we won 6-1, it was Mario who scored a penalty in the last second against Tottenham.
"But he needs to change if he wants to continue to play. I have seen a lot of players in my life like Mario that are fantastic and good guys but they lose all their talent and finish their careers in two or three years.
"That's where Mario is. He must change."

Van Persie - We'll put this defeat behind us

Robin van Persie was feeling low after Saturday's defeat at Queens Park Rangers but he is certain that Arsenal's spirits will soar in time for the visit of Manchester City.

The Dutchman saw his side's seven-match winning streak come to an end at Loftus Road thanks to goals in either half from Adel Taarabt and Samba Diakite. Arsenal remain in third place but they are now level on points with Tottenham, who beat Swansea City on Sunday.

It might have been a different story had Van Persie not been denied by a brilliant save from QPR goalkeeper Paddy Kenny but the captain is adamant that Arsenal will put Saturday's setback behind them.

"Everyone is disappointed but towards the end of the week I am sure the spirit will be how it was," Van Persie told Arsenal Player. "We’ll have a couple of days to be disappointed but after that our focus is on Manchester City.

"It is a shame we have wait eight days for the game, but it is how it is. Losing at QPR is a big blow but we have to look forward and the next one is a big one.

"Man City are second but drew [on Saturday] so they will need the points. We have seven big games to play but if you look at the big-name teams then we have City and Chelsea. As a fan of football I always love to play those games and one of them is next week.

"We have seven more games to play and I believe we can come third. It won’t be easy, everyone is fighting for every point and our opportunity is next week.

"Even last week when we were three points ahead [in third] with eight games left we never thought it was done. [Tottenham and] Chelsea won and came closer but we have to look at ourselves."

Arsenal will win trophies in coming seasons: Gervinho

Arsenal will win trophies in coming seasons: Gervinho

Arsenal striker Gervinho claims the foundations are in place for the club to win trophies in coming seasons as they attempt to pile on the misery for struggling Queens Park Rangers on Saturday.
Arsenal have gone on a winning streak of seven games, which has seen them overtake Tottenham and move into third spot in the Premier League.
While there is no prospect of ending their seven-year wait for a trophy this year — they are 15 points behind leaders Manchester United with eight games to play — their hopes of a Champions League spot are firmly in their own hands.
The buoyant mood at the Emirates Stadium is in stark contrast to that at QPR, who are fighting to avoid immediate relegation from the Premier League.
Ahead of Saturday’s trip across London, Gervinho pointed to the youthful nature of the Arsenal squad and tipped them to blossom in the near future.
“We can still win lots of trophies and we can do great things in the future,” the Ivory Coast international said. “We have a bright future because this is a good club.
“We are all still young, we have got some good players here, a good group. We have been through a lot of difficult times this season, lots of people have wavered in their belief of us.
“They have said this and they have said that, but we have returned to form and now we are going to try to finish the season well.”
Gervinho pointed to the form of striker Robin van Persie for Arsenal’s resurgence after a shaky start to the Premier League campaign.
Van Persie has scored 33 goals this season, including 25 in the Premier League and Gervinho added: “The standout player for me this year has been Robin.
“You can see his class with his finishing, how he leads the group, and with his experience.
“He is a player who has grown in to the role of captain and is the sort of player you need during the hard times.”
Meanwhile at Loftus Road, things are looking bleak. QPR are a point shy of safety with an extremely difficult run-in to come.
And star striker Djibril Cisse is banned for the next four games following his sending-off last Saturday at Sunderland – his second dismissal since signing for the club in January.
QPR chief executive Philip Beard made an embarrassing slip of the tongue while speaking at the Soccerex European Forum in Manchester on Thursday by stating “when we go down” before hastily correcting himself to say “if”.
But with games against Tottenham, Chelsea and Manchester City to come as well as a trip to Swansea, where Arsenal and City both lost, Beard’s mistake was understandable.
And Joey Barton, the QPR captain, spelled their plight out in no uncertain terms when he claimed the players are playing for their livelihoods.
“We’re as desperate for the points as they are – for totally different reasons obviously,” Barton said.
“But there are livelihoods on the line here. People’s careers are on the line. I’m not sure that’s the case at Arsenal, to be honest.
“They’ll want to win the game because they’re professionals and they’ll want to finish in the Champions League places, which is a minimum requirement for them.
“But there are lads here whose careers are on the line – and we have to realise that. This is more than a game of football now. The next eight games govern our futures.
“All the lads need to realise that. If we don’t, we’ll be punished for it.”

Desailly: Chelsea should appoint Di Matteo as permanent manager

Desailly: Chelsea should appoint Di Matteo as permanent manager

Roberto Di Matteo
Various other candidates have been put to Abramovich by leading agents since the dismissal of Villas-Boas earlier this month, but his former No.2 is regarded in some quarters as a front-runner.
“Mr Abramovich will do whatever he wants but I would really love to see Di Matteo keep the post,” said Desailly in an interview with Goal.com. “We are already hearing other coaches to come. Big names. Small names. Young. Old. But maybe the secret is to keep Di Matteo. Direct him on the mission and the vision the club have and see what is going to happen.
“I really think that they should give him a chance and I hope he [Abramovich] will keep Di Matteo. As the manager, yes. You just have to cover yourself a bit in the future in case you want to get rid of him. You need to fit somebody else into the club on standby in case in a year or two years’ time you decide to sack Di Matteo.”
Chelsea face Tottenham in the FA Cup semi-final next month, are one step away from the Champions League semi-finals and are still in the running to finish fourth in the league.
And Desailly believes the club are benefitting from an improved relationship between the senior players and the manager following the discord towards the end of Villas-Boas’ reign.
Speaking after Chelsea defeated Benfica 1-0 on Tuesday, the former World Cup and European Championships winner said: “You can see the commitment of [Didier] Drogba, [Frank] Lampard and John Terry. It is because of Di Matteo.
“It is because Di Matteo has a clear message to them. England is a country where you give a chance to people. Di Matteo is today in a moment where you should be able to give him the chance.
“What is happening on the field, apart from the game against Tottenham, which was not a very high level game, the Napoli and Benfica games have shown that there is a spirit and something special.”
The former France international believes that the team are suffering as a result of the club’s constant managerial turnover.
“I’ve been a player and after a while the one that comes, you know he will not last,” he explained. “You are not really focused. You do not open up to allow him to deliver his message.
“Di Matteo was already inside. If he gets the job, his message has already been spread. You have seen the commitment of the players. They have not given up. They have maybe not won or been brilliant on the pitch but at least we have seen something.”
Nevertheless, Desailly believes that Villas-Boas will go on to be a success elsewhere.
He added: “With a bit of time, maybe it would have worked. He can develop his skills at another place and I’m sure he will succeed. Specifically for Chelsea it did not work.
“But we are concerned about Chelsea and I really think that the chance should be given to Roberto Di Matteo.”
