Manchester United boss Sir Alex Ferguson becomes Accrington Stanley shareholder

Sir Alex Ferguson Sir Alex Ferguson, boss of mighty Manchester United, has become Accrington Stanley’s 500th new shareholder. Stanley are looking to secure their financial future and expand club ownership by issuing shares, and Reds boss Fergie has lent his support. Stanley chief executive Rob Heys told his club’s official website: “Sir Alex’s gesture of support in becoming a shareholder is extremely gratifying.  “We are not only honoured by his decision, but truly touched by his support for an historic neighbour. Everyone at the club is looking forward to welcoming him to our next AGM, where he’ll receive one vote as an official shareholder”. Sir Alex said: “Everyone has heard of Accrington Stanley and I am so pleased to see a small community club flourishing during these times. “Long may they continue to be an active and healthy member of the Football League.”

Terry ties could block Hiddink

Guus Hiddink’s ‘personal relationship’ with John Terry could take him out of contention to become Fabio Capello’s successor as England boss.

The Dutchman emerged as the favourite foreign contender for the England manager’s job following the resignation of the Italian boss on Wednesday.

Capello’s departure followed a disagreement with the Football Association over the decision to strip Chelsea‘s John Terry of the England captaincy with the defender awaiting trial on charges of racial abuse.

Despite FA chairman David Bernstein refusing to rule out the prospect of another foreign manager, Hiddink’s agent Cees van Nieuwenhuizen believes the 65-year-old could be hampered by a ‘very strong personal relationship’ with Terry.

The duo worked closely during the second half of the 2008/09 campaign when Hiddink took charge at Stamford Bridge, leading the Blues to FA Cup success but the manager’s agent expects the pair’s familiarity could prove problematic.

“I don’t, based on previous conversations with England FA board members, imagine that it would work,” he told the Daily Telegraph.

“Based on previous conversations with England FA board members I don’t imagine that it would work.”

“Guus also has a very strong personal relationship with John Terry and would be on his side in all this.”

Van Nieuwenhuizen also insisted a short-term role would not interest Hiddink with a preference on a full-time position, if any.

“He’s not done that in the past and had always previously also been involved in qualification,” he added.

Hiddink has had plenty of international management experience with spells with Holland, South Korea, Australia, Russia and most recently Turkey.

The former Chelsea boss led his native side to the World Cup semi-finals in 1998 before reaching the same stage with South Korea in 2002 as they co-hosted the tournament.

However, Hiddink’s most recent tenure as Turkey manager came to a halt when he failed to help the side qualify for Euro 2012.

Rooney backs Gerrard for captaincy

Manchester United striker Wayne Rooney has backed Liverpool star Steven Gerrard as the ideal choice to be the new England captain.

England are looking for a new captain after John Terry was stripped of the role earlier this month.

A number of names, including Rio Ferdinand, Scott Parker and Joe Hart have been mentioned as possible candidates to fill the role, but Rooney believes Gerrard would be perfect for the job.

Rooney has also declared his own interest in the taking the captain’s armband, but feels Liverpool rival Gerrard is the favourite.

Rooney wrote on Twitter: “For everyone asking, I would love to be England captain. But that’s up to new manager to decide. Gerrard is perfect choice for me.”

Arsene Wenger calls for focus ahead of Thierry Henry’s final Arsenal appearance in Champions League clash with AC Milan

Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger has urged his side to focus on their game against AC Milanin the Champions League on Wednesday.

The match looks set to be Thierry Henry‘s final appearance for the Gunners after it was confirmed that his loan spell from New York Red Bulls will not be extended.

Wenger told the club’s official website: “For me, first I hope it will be a positive emotion [on Wednesday]. But what is important is that we focus on the night because it is a massive game for us. Let’s hope we have positive emotions there.”
Henry made a dream return to Arsenal by netting the winning goal on his second debut for the club against Leeds United in the FA Cup third round.
The French striker has since gone on to score in the 7-1 demolition of Blackburn Rovers before coming on as a substitute to grab the winner against Sunderland on Saturday

But Wenger, who has now managed Henry in three separate spells at two different clubs, says the player would have been a success without his impact on his career.
“He would have done it without me,” he added. “I think that great players have one great characteristic – they will always surprise you with how far they can go. The motivation inside them is very big and they never have enough.

“Everybody is different. Let’s say with Thierry that I made him start in Monaco when he was 17.

“Then I brought him to Arsenal, then he went to Barcelona and then I brought him back to Arsenal so it is a little bit a three-times story, three chapters in the book.

“I think the history we have had together is special because you do not [usually] meet the same player three times.”

Wenger slams Marca’s RVP claims

Arsene Wenger has slammed Spanish newspaper Marca’s ‘creative’ reports that Robin Van Persie wants to leave Arsenal for Real Madrid.

The Gunners chief quickly hit out at reports on Friday which claimed his free-scoring 28-year-old Dutch international striker would be excited to play for Madrid, describing the possibility of joining Jose Mourinho’s side as ‘an honour’.

However, Wenger insisted that the report from Marca was fabricated and he has had no contact with either Real Madrid or Barcelona about Van Persie, who took his goals tally in all competitions this season to 28 following a hat-trick in last Saturday’s 7-1 mauling of struggling Blackburn.

“Frankly, Marca is as creative as some English newspapers. That means you cannot believe every word that is said in Marca,” Wenger told reporters at his press conference on Friday afternoon.

“They don’t care, Marca, at all. I think they are even far more from real evidence than any English newspapers. They create just stories.”

Van Persie, who has yet to agree to a new long-term contract at the Emirates Stadium, also spoke out on his Twitter site to confirm that he has ‘never spoken to Marca newspaper’.

Wayne Rooney says Manchester United have to beat Liverpool

With Manchester City now challenging Sir Alex Ferguson’s men for the title, the Manchester derby may be seen by some as more of a glamour tie as United face a Liverpool team who can, for this season at least, realistically only fight for a fourth-placed finish.

Rooney though, feels that this game will always be special for himself and both sets of supporters.

“United versus Liverpool has always been a massive game – it’s a game between the two biggest clubs in England,” he told the matchday programme, United Review.

“I used to watch the matches all the time when I was growing up and I always supported United in them! To be part of them now is fantastic but it’s a game you never want to lose.”

Much has been made in the build-up to this game about the saga involving Luis Suarez and Patrice Evra; the Uruguayan international plays only his second match since returning from suspension imposed when he was found guilty of directing racist abuse at Evra in the reverse fixture between the two teams in October.

Rooney, however, wants to focus on matters on the field, rather than off it.

“We’re all focused on the game,” he added. “There’s always a big buzz around Old Trafford for this fixture. The rivalry goes back years regardless of where the teams are in the league. There are three points at stake and that’s what both teams will be going for.”
